Abstract

The paper analyzes the basic principles of international humanitarian law, main
international conventions that were adopted within the mentioned framework of the international
law. In particular, the article focuses on the Geneva Convention of 1949, which provides for the
protection of civilian population and civilian infrustructure during hostilities, and the Hague Convention
of 1954, which provides for the protection of cultural heritage and historical monuments
during military actions.
The research also discusses the legal foundations of the Russian-Georgian war, using the example
of violation of the principles of international humanitarian law during the Russian military
aggression against Georgia in 2008.
